The Calumet or Holy Pipe is the foundation of Native Americans both theaching and ceremonies.
It comes in two sections: a brazier and a separable stem. They represent respectively the female and male aspect of Divinity, so join together the pipe is a holy union act.
When the Calumet is disassembled, its two parts are separately enveloped with bandages and transported in a hand-made sack.
The material used to build the brazier is catlinite or "pipe-stone", coming from the National Monument of Pipe-Stone. The stem is instead made with either cedarwood or ash.
When the Calumet is assembled, it represents the four Kingdoms: the brazier (made of Earth) is the Mineral one, the stem (made of wood) is the Vegetable one, feathers and fur hanging from its stem are the Animal kingdom, while the person who made the pipe, he who joined it together and he who smokes it are the Human kingdom.
Furthermore the five elements are present: Earth, represented by both tobacco and herbs to be smoked, Fire, when it is lighted, Air, represented by breathing in to keep the smoking mixture lighted, Water, represented by saliva, and Ether, represented by smoke.
So the Calumet represents the Wholeness.
